Six Innovations for Better Water Management
Here are six simple innovations to better manage water resources from the Food Think Tank. These low-cost, simple innovations are available in areas with limited access to clean water.
Agricultural Costs of Climate Change, Land Degradation and Water Scarcity
According to one study the combined impacts of Climate change, land degradation and water scarcity could cost as much as $8 trillion in agriculture assets each year. This is the finding of a study from the University of Oxford’s Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment.
Agricultural impacts of climate change, land degradation and water scarcity are complicated by increased production. This increased production is due to growing investment in agriculture which is intended to capitalize on high commodity prices. According to the Oxford Smith School study capital stock could lose between $4.4 trillion and $8 trillion in a single year.

The World’s Aquifers are Being Tapped Unsustainably
Humans are using freshwater faster than it can be replenished. According to a comprehensive study, water stored in deep underground aquifers is being tapped at an unsustainable rate. Our over-consumption of water for things like cropland irrigation has dire ecological implications. Humans are not the only ones who require water, this vital resource is essential for ecosystems like forests and fisheries.
According to recent research published in Nature, almost one quarter of the world’s population lives in regions where groundwater is being used up faster than it can be replenished. This research studied the rate at which water is being extracted from 800 aquifers worldwide and the rate at which it is being recharged. The results of this study indicate that many agricultural centers are using water faster than it can be replenished.

US Automotive Industry: Efficient Vehicles and Sustainability Initiatives (GM, Ford & Tesla)
U.S. automakers are producing an ever increasing line-up of more
efficient vehicles. However, efficiency measures in the auto industry
extend beyond the vehicles they produce. American car companies must
compete with more than 36 new hybrid and electric vehicles (EVs) that
have been or will be launched in 2013. Growing demand for highly
efficient vehicles has compelled almost every brand to get into the EV
market, which gives consumers an ever expanding list of vehicles to
choose from.
In addition to expanded product lines, innovative sustainability measures are being adopted by automakers. As explained by Green Car Reports, the major automakers are doing more on the sustainability front when it comes to their EV production lines. They are reducing their waste, increasing their use of solar power while reducing their energy usage.
Automotive brands are increasingly seeing value in greening their operations and products as evidenced by Interbrand’s 2013 Best Global Green Brands ranking, which counted four automotive brands in the top five spots. The ranking evaluates companies based on their environmental performance and the public’s perception of their green credentials.

World Water Week Raises Awareness through Gamification
A new game designed to promote sustainable water resources management has been released for World Water Week. The game is called Aqua Republica and was created through a partnership between UNEP and DHI along with the collaboration of a number of others.
The game not only raises water awareness it is designed to help build capacity in some of the most critical issues in water resources management.
In this game participants make decisions about water management and in the process they learn about the connectivity and importance of water resources, as well as the need for careful management.
While the world of Aqua Republica is fictitious, the challenges of sustainably managing a limited supply of water resources in a situation of growing demand between multiple users and uses are very much based on real life scenarios.

Green Education and Ten Careers in Sustainability
A green education opens doors to a number of high paying careers and helps to build a more sustainable world. The importance of a workforce schooled in sustainability is critical to the future of our planet.
Our environment is in crisis due to the ways we produce energy, grow food and manage water and waste. If we continue with business as usual a systemic collapse is inevitable and in many places it has already begun. People who understand the dynamics of sustainability can dramatically change the ways we do things before we pass irreversible tipping points that will condemn future generations to an environmental apocalypse.

WBCSD Report: Building the Business case for Water Valuation
The business community depends on water as does everyone on the planet. Competition for increasingly scarce water resources will pit business interests against societal interests. It is becoming increasingly evident that the business community cannot continue to use water without acknowledging its real value. This is particularly true as we anticipate increasing global demand.
According to some estimates between 2000 and 2050 we can expect a 55 percent increase in worldwide demand. There are some industries that will more than triple their water consumption. For example, the manufacturing sector is increasing their water usage by 400 percent.

Disturbing Water Statistics from the Food Tank
According to the U.N. World Water Development Report (WWDR), at our current rate of consumption we would require about 3.5 Earths to meet the demand from Europeans and North Americans.
The Barilla Center for Food & Nutrition (BCFN) reports that if everyone on the planet acquired the same water consumption habits of the Western world we would see a 75 percent increase in water usage.
As noted by the U.N. Environment Programme (UNEP) two thirds of the world’s population will be living in areas with water scarcity by 2025.
According to the WHO and the UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme (JMP) for Water Supply and Sanitation, 768 million people do not have access to clean water, and 2.5 billion people do not have access to adequate sanitation facilities.

The Rim Fire: More Evidence of Climate Change
The Rim fire currently engulfing California is the latest example of increasingly destructive wildfires caused by climate change. In the Southern Yosemite area alone there have already been four large fires this summer.
According to Matthew Hurteau, assistant professor of forest resources at Penn State University, warming temperatures, prolonged drought, and a century’s worth of fire suppression policy are “priming the system to make it more flammable.”
