America`s Greenest School Contest 2010

The 2010 America’s Greenest School ContestSM shows that the kids are deeply committed to the sustainability of the world they live in. To vie for the honor of America's greenest school, children across the US submitted entries explaining what they would do if they were in charge of making their school a greener, more eco-friendly place.

Entries took the form of photo collections, music, videos, essays, or photos of a diorama, collage or piece of artwork.

America voted for the winner from a list of the top 10 finalists. The 2010 winner of the America’s Greenest School Contest was Ms. Roberts’ 3rd and 4th grade classes, they beat out almost 550 entries from nearly 1,600 students nationwide. South Shore Charter Public School in Norwell, MA won a hybrid school bus from IC Bus, as well as a green audit and approximately $20,000 to use for green improvements. The students themselves will also share a $3,000 scholarship.

Here is an excerpt from the winning submission: "There are many important reasons to be green. One is that our actions affect people we don’t even know! For example, if you leave trash behind at the beach, then everyone else has to live with your litter, including the wildlife. Second, some resources, like the ozone, are not renewable. Last, being green is like being a good citizen – it means that every person does their own small part to make the world a better place...it can’t happen unless everyone gets involved!"

LAUSD Green School Initiatives

The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) is going green to reduce costs and be more efficient. LAUSD is slashing greenhouse-gas emissions with the aim of becoming one of the greenest school districts in the country.

The LAUSD's goal is to reduce energy and water use by 10% from 2007 levels by 2013. However, with over 14,000 buildings, 700,000 students, spread out over 710 square miles, the district currently uses more water and energy than any other in the state.

The LAUSD also has over 1,300 school buses, but in March 2010, hundreds of decades-old buses were upgraded to less polluting, more energy efficient propane models.

With half of California's water going to outdoor use, some schools were outfitted with smart irrigation systems that reduce water consumption for landscaping.

Eight schools, out of a planned 250, are having solar power installed. LAUSD plans to install 50 megawatts of solar photovoltaics, which could save the district more than $20 million annually.

The districts 44 planned campuses are being built in compliance with green building standards known as the Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS). CHPS is the United States' first green building rating program specifically designed for K-12 schools.

LAUSD continues to develop core math, science, language-arts and social-studies curriculum have hands-on learning opportunities that draw on the district’s sustainability initiatives.

The LAUSD is a model for the nation, they are trying to prove that by reducing their footprint they can provide cost savings that free precious resources.

West Michigan's Green Academic Offerings

With the exception of the Pacific Northwest, West Michigan offers the best sustainable education programs of any region in the country. West Michigan offers a wide array of green educational programs from graduate degrees to professional certification courses.

Aquinas College was the first school in the US to offer an undergraduate program in sustainable business in 2003. In 2010 they launched a sustainable business master’s degree program.

Aquinas College also has a certification course that began in 2009, it is designed to update the skills of professionals working in the field. The Professional Certificate Program in Sustainable Business includes six three-hour sessions, with two core sessions that are required plus four electives. The course covers topics such as energy systems and policy, corporate social responsibility, industrial ecology, life-cycle assessments, metrics and reporting. The college also has other professional certification programs in sustainable business practices including carbon management. For a complete list of the schools educational programs go to the Center for Sustainability.

In the fall of 2010, Davenport University in Grand Rapids began offering a post-baccalaureate sustainable business-development certification, and Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo has significantly enhanced its “green manufacturing” program.

Many schools in Michigan are incorporating sustainability into their academic programs. One school, Grand Valley State University, is incorporating sustainability throughout its entire curriculum.

Following the office furniture industry and the green building movement's adoption of sustainable business practices, higher education is responding to the market demand for sustainable skills in West Michigan.

New York's Leed Certified Universities

Two New York universities, Ithaca College and Hamilton College, have received recognition for their green achievements.

Ithaca College has been awarded two Energy Star certifications for residence halls Clarke and Hood and a platinum LEED award for a business building on campus.

Hamilton College has been awarded two Energy Star certifications for residence halls Skenandoa and Spencer, in addition to the LEED Gold certification for the renovation of the 40-year-old Kirner-Johnson (KJ) Building.

Energy Star certification enhances efficiency by at least 75% compared to traditional buildings based utility bills and energy consumption volume and costs. A LEED certified building must score well in 5 categories: sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, and indoor environmental quality.
