Adopt CSR or Risk a Consumer Boycott

A new survey shows that 90 percent of consumers indicate they would boycott a company if they learned of irresponsible behavior. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is now de rigueur as consumers are increasingly demanding that companies assume responsibility for social and environmental issues. According to the 2013 Cone Communications/Eco Global CSR Study, 93 percent of those surveyed want to see more corporate social responsibility in the products and services they purchase.

Project Management of Corporate Sustainability; Implementation Perspectives (White paper)

Whilst there is general agreement that CSR is founded on the three broad aspects of Social (People), Economic (Profit) and Environmental (Planet), the often referenced “Triple Bottom Line”, each of those aspects must be contextualized within the frame of reference of the particular organization or domain it is applied to. Consequently, the actual implementation of corporate sustainability with appropriate tools and processes is as varied (and underutilized) as the domains to which it is applied.

The aim of this paper is to examine the fundamental requirements that such tools and processes need to address and establish a set of implementation perspectives common to the majority of domains, setting a foundation for a framework that may be used across multiple domains and within organizations for multiple project types.

The Corporate Sector can Save the World

The Business community may offer the best hope of saving the world from the ravages of environmental decay. In the context of the difficult economic times we are experiencing corporate initiatives may be our best hope for slowing the progression towards worsening environmental calamity. As reported in The Guardian, Peter Bakker corporate, the president of the World Business Council for Sustainable Business (WBCSD), "believes that the corporate sector currently offers the best opportunity for saving the world."In the wake of the disappointing outcome at Rio+20, Bakker is on a "mission to encourage business to implement change at scale." He believes that the short term fate of the world hinges on "the coalitions of the willing," comprised of local efforts, and responsible cities and countries.

After the recession of 2008 companies got leaner and part of this new way of doing business involves looking at inefficiencies throughout the value chain as a way to leverage cost and enhance savings. Lean efforts have been demonstrated to yield substantial environmental benefits (pollution prevention, waste reduction and reuse opportunities) as well as leverage compliance issues.

An integrated sustainable supply chain, involves life-cycle management. That means considering all the steps of a manufacturing process, and all the links in the supply chain and value chain to the end of a product’s life and beyond (ie how it is disposed of).
