This year's Blog Action Day underscores the power of social media to combat climate change. Bloggers from all parts of the globe came together to help raise awareness about the importance of combating climate change. On October 15th 13,000 bloggers from 155 countries on six continents wrote about climate change. The Prime Minister of the UK Gordon Brown wrote a Blog Action Day post indicating that "climate change is the biggest threat to all our futures," President Barack Obama's White House blog contributed a post along with the PSOE, the governing party of Spain. Many publications including CNN wrote articles helping to make Blog Action Day the top Google blog search last Thursday.
According to blogpulse, there was a 500 percent increase in the number of posts about climate change last Thursday. In total there were 31,000 total trackable blog posts, and the current estimate is that together we reached at least 17.9 million people.
We all can feel proud of this remarkable collective effort. For many, we hope this serves as an entry point into the broader movement to address the issue of climate change. There are a number of ways and some amazing organizations through which you can continue to remain involved, and we encourage you to check out our Take Action section to learn more.
I would like to thank everyone who participated as well as Robin Beck and the other organizers of Blog Action Day 2009. Your participation helped change the conversation and showed the power of the web to connect people across the world who despite their varied backgrounds have one shared desire: to make a difference.
Efforts to address climate change did not end at the stroke of midnight on October 15. Social media based initiatives are part of a growing awareness that extends throughout the year.
